WWE Smackdown Recap - 9/18/09
WWE Fatheads - Smackdown on your wall
actions are just a new dimension in this angle. Overall, Breaking Point was a pretty good pay per view.

Anyway, back to WWE Smackdown.

A limousine arrives in the back and our GM Theodore Long steps out. The “boo birds” are out early as Mr. Holla Holla Holla isn’t well received. He looks a bit paranoid. I wonder why. A legion of security guards quickly flanks Teddy.

As we saw back on RAW, Batista is the first person to come to the ring. He’s got a raucous ovation (perhaps piped-in). Todd Grisham says Batista had a choice and wanted to come back to Smackdown. No, Todd, he came back because Edge got injured, Mysterio got suspended, and Jeff left and then got busted.

Batista calls WWE Smackdown the “A” show (it will never be despite what we all think). He begins to go into why he has returned but Chris Jericho’s music hits and out comes one-half of the tag champs. Jericho claims Batista makes him sick. Batista is just like the injury-prone Edge. They also both pander to the fans and beg to be cheered. Jericho wonders if Batista wants a trophy for returning from injury. I love Jericho.

Batista pulls a Ric Flair and states, “To be the man, you have to beat the man.” Tonight’s main event: Batista v. Chris Jericho. Before leaving the ring, Batista delivers a spine buster to his adversary.

A few moments later, we are backstage in the locker room. Jericho rushes into the room and asks the Big Show where he was. Show said he did as Jericho said; he stayed behind and allowed Jericho to handle things alone. Jericho goes and reminds us that he was the first unified champ and he’ll take care of Batista.

Later on, we will have an interview with referee Scott Armstrong about his role in the Punk/Undertaker match at Breaking Point. Holy crap, they acknowledged the ref by name.

WWE Smackdown is still in the Great White North (How goes it, Angelina?) as we are taped and rolled from Hamilton, Ontario. The WWE Universe is all a tizzy after witnessing the Montreal Screwjob Version 2.0 at last Sunday’s Breaking Point pay per view. If you are unsure what I speak of, CM Punk retained his World Heavyweight Championship after The Undertaker was given the Bret Hart treatment in the Submission Match.

A lot of people are upset at this decision, calling the WWE unimaginative for the outcome. Could we have seen anything else? Both men didn’t lose any

credibility from what happened. The feud is not at all over and Long’s

Match #1: John Morrison v. Mike Knox

Dolph Ziggler is at the announce table for this match. We learn that the IC Title will be defended at Hell in a Cell between Morrison and Ziggler. Knox once again delivers a creepy promo as he walks to the ring.
Knox is in control early on but JoMo finds his spot and takes control. Nice plancha from the champ from the apron onto Knox who is outside the ring. Back from commercial, Knox rams Morrison’s back into the ring post. Over at the announce desk, Ziggler says that Pat Patterson is a
Hall of Famer, but so what? He was, of course, speaking of his attack on the wrestling legend on Sunday.

Morrison counters a side slam into a DDT. Running knee to Knox’s face before the standing shooting star press. JoMo gets a two count. Knox hits his sick running crossbody block. Morrison is able to avoid a running Knox, springboard kick to the head followed up by Starship Pain.

After the match, Morrison gets on the microphone and says that Ziggler was playing footsies with Grisham under the table. He then gets the crowd to start chanting Mr. Ziggles. Ziggler gets angry and leaves.
Winner: John Morrison by pinfall, using Starship Pain
Opinion: The match was good. I like to see Knox every week. Morrison never disappoints. I was surprised that no one interfered, be it Ziggler or Finlay. Glad to hear that the IC Title will be defended at Hell in a Cell. Morrison hasn’t fought at a PPV in about half a year. Mr. Ziggles as a taunt is highly immature and unfunny to me.

We are backstage with Josh Matthews and the referee Scott Armstrong. Matthews asks Armstrong about the controversial finish. Armstrong has been in this business for 30 years and that was the worst thing he’s ever had to do. It made him sick to have to do that but he has a wife and a family to think about. He did what he had to do to keep his job.

Melina vs. Michelle McCool
Match #2: Melina v. Michelle McCool

McCool is limping down the ramp, brace on knee. So, Melina is going to fight a gimpy McCool? Hmm, I wonder who will win this. McCool uses some heelish tactics to gain the upperhand, hiding behind the ropes and going outside the ring. She gets Melina in the Dragon Sleeper. When McCool goes for a baseball slide Melina avoids it and McCool continues sliding to the outside. (Newton’s Law, folks.) Back in the ring, Melina drop-toe holds McCool. Primal scream by Melina before she bounces off the ropes and lands on McCool’s back and neck.
Back to the standing position, McCool goes for a kick but Melina pulls off her Matrix move and avoids the foot. However, when she gets up, McCool is ready and delivers the big boot after all. McCool has Melina up for what looks like the Widow’s Peak (we know McCool doesn’t mind using other’s moves) but Melina counters it and hits her Last Call.
Winner: Melina by pinfall, using Last Call
Opinion: The outcome of this match was a given once we saw who Melina was facing. The match was watchable. Pretty decent even. I just haven’t been given anything to love when it comes to the WWE Diva’s division.

We go back to the back with Teddy Long in his office with his guards. He turns around and is startled by the appearance of Vince McMahon. Vince wants to know where his picture is. VKM praises Long for getting Batista back on Smackdown but quickly turns angry. He wants to know why Long did what he did to ‘Taker at Breaking Point. McMahon orders Long to go to the ring and tell the fans why he double-crossed the Deadman.

After the commercial, Teddy comes down to address the Smackdown faithful. Everything was planned to prevent the Phenom from winning the title. He blames the decision on the times we are living in. He has to think about his family. (Wait, wasn’t this the same guy who was going to marry Kristal like two years ago?) Long apologizes to the WWE Universe, the fans in attendance, and to ‘Taker…Long heads to the back to his limo. He enters and tells the driver to head out. The Undertaker is revealed as the chauffeur. We are then treated to some horrible acting by Teddy and campy special effects by the WWE. The doors lock, smoke begins to fill the back of the limo and the lights go purple-y. Long is kicking and screaming as the car leaves the arena.

One segment is followed by another as CM Punk is introduced. His first words on the mic are, “I told you so.” He said he would beat Jeff Hardy and he did. He would get rid of Jeff Hardy forever and he did (thank you, Punk). He also would get the Undertaker in the Anaconda Vise and make him tap and he did that. He calls the fans inebriated zombies looking for the newest anti-depressant to put a smile on their face. Fans chant boring, but I think that’s because they don’t appreciate great material. Damn Jeff Hardy fans. CM Punk says he is no liar; he is a prophet. He is the voice of a new generation. He is a champion we can be proud of. (He’s a champion who won’t have 300-plus pills found in his home also, I say.) “If you’re not straight edge like me, well, that just means I’m better than you.”
Hart Dynsty vs. Cryme Tyme
Match #3: Cryme Tyme w/ Eve v. The Hart Dynasty (Tag Match)

“Welcome home” chants start what is the same tag match we continue to see on Smackdown. Can we please get some more tag teams on Friday nights? DH Smith and Shad Gaspard start things. Smith stomps away at Shad in the corner. When Shad gets a tag to JTG, Cryme Tyme hits their usual double-team move where Shad throws JTG over his head and JTG throws a forearm/clothesline at the opponent in the corner. After some more fighting, we go to
commercial. Back from commercial, the Canadian kids hit their tag move: drop-toe hold by Smith on Shad and Tyson Kidd delivers a dropkick to Shad’s head. Nice leg drop from the middle rope onto Kidd by JTG when he is tagged in the match. Jim Ross brings up, and mispronounces, Kanye West’s name and states how West made a fool of himself at the VMA’s. Natalya tries to enter the ring but Eve stops here. That caused enough of a distraction as Kidd hit a modified Blockbuster on JTG for the win.

Winner: Hart Dynasty by pinfall, using Blockbuster

Opinion: The crowd didn’t seem so thrilled by this match all the time. As they were in Canada, Cryme Tyme wasn’t as over as they normally are. We definitely need more tag teams. How many times can these six possibly match up?

Melina walks into a room backstage and sees pictures of Ziggler and McCool, taken last week by Layla, plastered all over the walls. She attempts to take them down but Maria walks in. Maria accuses Melina of putting up the pictures and tells her she’s done with her.
Kane vs. The Great Khali
Match #4: Kane v. The Great Khali w/ Ranjin Singh

This match quickly ends up outside the ring and before long Kane is DQ’d after he hits Khali in the head with a chair. He then drags the Punjabi Playboy over to the ring steps. Kane slams Khali’s leg with one of the steps repeatedly. As Kane walks to the back, and medics rush out, he smiles.

Winner: The Great Khali by DQ
Opinion: This week is good for ending horrible feuds. Chavo/Hornswoggle might be over on RAW and Kane/Khali is definitely done on Friday nights. This ‘match’ was thankfully short.

We recap R-Truth’s recent problems with upstart Drew McIntyre. Charlie Haas is in the ring for a match. R-Truth’s song hits but McIntyre comes out. He informs us that Truth was injured in the back and can’t compete. He congratulates Haas as the winner of the match. McIntyre then extends his hand to Haas. Haas hesitates before shaking hands (silly). McIntyre hits his butterfly DDT on Haas before leaving the ring.

Opinion of segment: As there was no match, it was nice to see how they continue to play out this feud between
Drew McIntire vs. Charlies Haas
McIntyre and Truth. Wish they would do something with Haas, though.
Batista vs. Chris Jericho
Main Event: Batista v. Chris Jericho

The match starts out with Jericho slapping Batista in the face. Batista smirks before driving Jericho into the corner and then hitting some shoulder charges into Jericho’s stomach. Jericho is able to get some offense in after he dropkicks Batista’s leg. Outside the ring, Jericho slams Batista’s head into the announce desk. Back in the ring, Jericho continues his focus on Batista’s legs. Jericho goes for the Lionsault but misses and then runs into a spinebuster. Batista attempts a Batista Bomb but Jericho counters and hits an enziguri. TWO.
Jericho climbs to the top rope but when he leaps off, he is met with Batista’s forearm. Another Batista Bomb attempt is countered, this time into the Walls of Jericho.

Batista uses his strength again to escape. Jericho goes for the Code Breaker but Batista holds on to him and gets him up for the Batista Bomb.

Winner: Batisa by pinfall, using Batista Bomb

Opinion: The main event started with nine minutes left in the show so it wasn’t bound to be a classic. There have been 2 matches with Batista this week that were fairly short. Is this just the WWE’s way of easing him back or is he not 100 percent yet? The crowd wasn’t into this. They were sitting and rather quiet for the majority of this match.

Josh Matthews goes up to Big Show, backstage. Show says that Batista got lucky. If Batista was to go after Big Show next week he won’t be as lucky. Looks like we have a match for next week.

Opinion of Show: The show was decent. We’ve definitely seen better Smackdowns. This one had far too many segments and not enough quality in the matches department.
