ECW Recap - 9/22/09

WWE Fatheads - Smackdown on your wall
the show. Isn’t pro wrestling just a coincidental world? Sheamus gets heat by claiming Americans steal and try to find the easy way out. Benjamin gets revenge by showing picture evidence of Sheamus’ Family Tree: Pippi Longstockings, Ronald McDonald, Carrot Top, and Wendy from the hamburger chain are some of the red heads shown on the screen. Sheamus attacks Benjie and they brawl, destroying the set, until security breaks them up.

There are two weeks before yet another WWE pay per view, this one being Hell in a Cell. How PG of you, Vince. Tonight’s ECW main event pits Zack Ryder v. ECW Champion Christian. Has the Long Island native improved his stamina where he can possibly wrestle away the title from the leader of the Peeps? Find out tonight.

The show begins with Tony Atlas introducing us to the host of The Abraham Washington Show, Abraham Washington. Tonight’s first guest is Sheamus. Sheamus looks spiffy with a black and white shirt with a black vest. He’s got a swanky hat to boot. Abe puts on some sunglasses and makes jokes about Sheamus’ skin color.

They begin to talk about the issues between Sheamus and Shelton Benjamin. Washington informs us that Benjamin is also on

Match #1: Paul Burchill w/ Katie Lea v. Yoshi Tatsu

Yoshi’s speed gives him the upperhand. Clothesline by Tatsu to Burchill, knocking the Brit to the outside. Tatsu then launches himself over the top rope. Back in the ring, Katie Lea causes a distraction while Yoshi is on the top rope. Burchill takes advantage and hits a top-rope fisherman’s buster. Burchill slows down the pace after a Samoan Drop. The crowd gets behind Yoshi. Rolling snapmare followed by a kick to Burchill’s chest by Tatsu. The man from the Far East hits a top-rope spinning wheel kick. Moments later, both men go to the top but Burchill knocks Tatsu down and then hits a flying knee drop. Tatsu kicks out of the pin. When Burchill goes for a body slam, Tatsu slips out and hits his kick to Burchill’s head.

Backstage Zack Ryder is talking to Savannah. He tells us that by the end of the night he will be ECW Champion.

Returning from commercial, we are in the back where Burchill and his sister are walking down the hall. Burchill gets upset and storms off, leaving his sister behind. Gregory Helms comes into the picture and asks Katie about the match. Katie says that it’s all Helms fault for the loss. Burchill then blindsides Helms and beats him down. He tells his sister to stay away from Helms and then they walk away. Hmm, why is Burchill telling her to stay away? Interesting.

Winner: Yoshi Tatsu pinfall, using kick to the head
Opinion: Standard wrestling match where the stronger opponent grounds his opponent. Both men were able to show off their moves, which was good. Very good opening.
Match #2: Ezekiel and Kozlov w/ William Regal v. Two Jobbers

Squash city here. This is all to show off the power of Zeke and Kozlov. They do exactly that, as they completely dominate the two local talents. The match ends when Ezekiel hits a uranage. After the match, Vlad hits his uranage on the other guy.
Winner: Ezekiel and Kozlov by pinfall, uranage
Opinion: Can we really judge a squash? Ezekiel and Kozlov are huge and dominating. That did not change here.

The SummerSlam DVD is now available at your local retailers.

Backstage, Regal and his goons meet Goldust. Regal and Goldust will meet on Thursday’s Superstars show. Regal calls the match a joke, tonight’s title match a joke, and Goldust a joke.

We have a Smackdown! recap, showing us the horrible B-movie special effects displayed in Teddy Long’s limousine when the Undertaker hijacked it.
Main Event: Christian © v. Zack Ryder for the ECW Championship

Ryder removes the headband prior to the match causing Striker to claim that he is showing seriousness. I’m sorry, but how can a man wrestling in a half-pant get-up be taken seriously? I do love the trash talking that occurs in a Ryder match.

Christian dropkicks Ryder off the apron and then leaps over the top rope via middle turnbuckle. Ryder and Christian are both on the apron. Ryder pushes Christian off and he lands chest-first on the steel steps. Ryder focuses on Christian’s midsection, using leg vices and elbow strikes.

Crhistian counters Ryder and hits a flapjack. Ryder goes for his Rough Rider legdrop but Christian ducks and hits a reverse DDT, followed by the Flashpoint (running forearm smash to seated opponent). Two count for the champ.
Zach Ryder
Ryder comes back but Christian counters the Zack Attack into a slingshot. Christian goes for a springboard sunset flip but Ryder sits down on him and gets a near fall. Ryder charges at Xtian who is in the corner, Christian evades his attacker and hits a pendulum kick. Missile dropkick by Captain Charisma gets a two.

Ryder counters the Killswitch. He also avoids a flying crossbody. Now Ryder hits his legdrop but can only get a two. A second Killswitch is avoided. Ryder uses the ropes and tries to pin Christian but only gets a two. Clothesline by Ryder is avoided by Christian, who hits a hotshot, then a flying shoruken (flying European uppercut), and finally the Killswitch is engaged.

Winner: Christian by pinfall, Killswitch
Opinion: Excellent match here. Ryder shows that he can hang with the champ. Christian sold the beating on the midsection by his opponent. Very good back and forth and a wonderful way to end the show. Granted, we could have had another match in lieu of the second one, but this was a great night on ECW.
